Barnard Castle! One of the better castle ruins we have visited. There is so much space and the layout is magnificent. I tried to put the top two pictures together like a panoramis view. The tower is to the left and you can actually go up to the top. There were 4 floors in it. Amazing. Also on the left was the main quarters and dining hall. The River Tees is just below the tower. The bottom left picture is in the middle of the castle grounds. If you look closely you can see three banks. This ditch was actually dug for further proctection of the main castle building and tower. This ditch could be filled with water to form a mote and then drained again. The bottom right picture is taken from the tower and shows a beautiful bridge over the River Tees. Posted by Picasa
